I actually don’t drink much beer these days.
But I do subscribe to /r/beermoney, a subreddit for people who want a little extra pocket money. Here’s their community description:
/r/Beermoney is a community for people to discuss mostly online money-making opportunities. You shouldn't expect to make a living, but it is possible to make extra cash on the side for your habits/needs.
As I mentioned in our intro post, I left my job at a brick-and-mortar school in 2022. I was burnt out, but didn’t want to leave teaching entirely. So, I scored a virtual teaching gig, which I enjoy very much, but had to take quite a pay cut. I’m still making enough to get by, but I have to be more careful my superfluous purchases.
But now I can spend more because I sell my opinions and data. Thanks, capitalism! 👍🏼
There’s two main ways I earn #beermoney:
Filling out surveys. This method doesn’t bring in most money, but the change can add up. The surveys are usually either for product/service feedback or university studies. There are several apps that I hit up daily; I’ll share some of them later.
✅ What I like about completing surveys is that I can do them whenever I have downtime or can multitask. Watching Grey’s Anatomy? I’ll fill out some surveys. Can’t sleep? A survey or two. Using my squatty potty? Survey.
🤷🏻♂️ Some surveys will ask for identifying info, but some are less intrusive and just ask for your opinions. You’re the captain of your ship, so you can always skip surveys you don’t feel comfortable filling out.
❌ It can get boring answering some of the same questions every day (like age, zip code, and household income). If you hate filling out forms, you might hate most of the survey sites.User research interviews. These opportunities can be few and far between, but if you qualify for one, they can really pay off. If you meet a study’s specific demographic, a company will ask for your feedback on their product or service. They may record your voice or screen, but some are in the form of a video interview.
✅ The amount of money you can make per hour through interviews can be around $50/hr! That’s a very rough estimate, but I’ve made $10 for a 10-minute “talk through” and $75 for an hour-long video interview. These are genuinely interesting to me since it often involves previewing future products and services. The interviewers are usually super nice, too.
❌ Obviously, video interviews might not work for you if you don’t feel comfortable talking to strangers. Also, M-F 9-5ers may not be able to fit into interviewers’ schedules.
🤔 Is it worth it?
Depends on how much time you’re willing to dedicate and how comfortable you feel sharing your information and opinions. Here’s a breakdown of my first six months of pursuing #beermoney:
The first six months were an interesting experiment since I was trying out different sites and apps. Plus, I started grad school, got shingles, and adopted a dog within a month from each other, so that played a factor into the numbers.
🧐 Will I share my ways?
Of course! Let’s start with what you want to know, so answer the poll below and/or leave a comment with your questions. My next post will focus on the winner of the poll!
Okay, so here’s one of the websites I use: PaidViewpoint. It only brings in $10-$15 a month, but half of the time, the surveys just verify my demographic and the other times, you give your feedback on household product marketing. I like it because it pays you something (even if it’s a few pennies), no matter if you qualify for their longer surveys or not. They have a good mobile site, too, so you can knock out some surveys on the go. If you want to sign up, show your love by using my referral link, thank you! https://app.paidviewpoint.com/?r=ninacdot
